Foam Pads And Padding For Lymphedema Bandaging

In a multi-layer compression bandage for lymphedema, the first layer is typically a stockinette. The next layer is a padding layer.

Foam pads and padding – made out of polyester, cotton, or lightweight foam – help cushion the limb and bony areas of the bandaged area. The foam helps prevent sharp indentations and skin irritations. And most importantly, the foam padding helps evenly distribute the gradient pressure of the compression bandages.

FAQs About Foam Bandages For Lymphedema

Often used as part of a multi-layer compression system for the treatment and management of lymphedema, foam bandages help evenly distribute pressure, while cushioning and protecting the skin.

Below are frequently asked questions about foam bandages for lymphedema.

What Are Foam Bandages For Lymphedema

Foam bandages for lymphedema are soft, compressible bandages that are used to provide gentle, even pressure on areas affected by lymphedema. Designed to be wrapped around swollen limbs, foam bandages are often used under compression bandages and compression garments.

How Do Foam Bandages Help With Lymphedema

Because foam bandages help distribute pressure evenly across the limb that is affected by lymphedema, they help prevent high-pressure points that could cause discomfort and/or restrict lymphatic flow. Foam bandages also help improve the effectiveness of compression therapy, by evening out pressure and controlling swelling in hard-to-wrap areas (such as around joints).

How Do Foam Bandages Improve Lymphatic Flow

Foam bandages gently massage the tissue, which helps stimulate the lymphatic system. This, in turn, promotes the movement of excess lymph fluid out of swollen areas.

    Do Foam Bandages Provide Cushioning

Foam bandages provide a soft layer that cushions and protects sensitive skin from the pressure caused by compression bandaging and compression garments.

Can Foam Bandages Help Prevent Skin Damage

The cushioning layer of foam bandages can help prevent skin damage, by reducing pressure points.

Can Foam Bandages Help Reduce Fibrosis

Fibrosis, which is often caused by lymphedema, is a hardening of the tissues. Foam bandages can help prevent fibrosis by keeping the tissue pliable and by promoting better lymphatic fluid movement.

Can Foam Bandages Be Used On Any Part Of The Body

Designed to be used on just about any part of the body, foam bandages can be cut and shaped to fit different areas, including limbs, joints, and other challenging locations.

Can Foam Bandages Be Used By Themselves

Foam bandages are typically used under bandages, compression wraps, and compression garments.

Can Foam Bandages Be Used For Other Conditions

Foam bandages are often used not only for lymphedema, but also for treating edema, venous insufficiency, and other medical conditions.
